How does the Mental Health Reform affect me?
Effective 1 April 2018, a Mental Health Reform was introduced by the Australian Government.
This reform is aimed at making it easier for people with private health insurance to access mental health services when they need it most, without facing substantial out of pocket costs. The reform allows those members with limited or restricted mental health cover to upgrade their policy to receive higher mental health cover immediately (not requiring them to serve the usual two month waiting period).
To be able to access the once off exemption, members need to meet the following criteria:
- Must be admitted under the care or by referral from a consultant Psychiatrist or Addiction Specialist
- Must currently have hospital cover and held the cover for a minimum of two months
- Not have previously used the mental health exemption with Westfund or any previous health fund (lifetime limit per person)
Westfund must be advised within five business days of the admission date.
Members are encouraged to contact Westfund prior to any hospital admissions.
